Description

Suburban Water Heater Gas Valve 161357

*fits the ST-42/ ST-60

The Suburban 161357 Gas Valve is the OEM replacement proportional gas valve used in Suburban ST-42 and ST-60 tankless RV water heaters. It regulates propane flow to the burner as directed by the water heater’s electronic controls, allowing the unit to adjust burner output and maintain the requested water temperature.

Suburban specifically lists part 161357 for both the ST-42 and ST-60 water heater models.

Models It Fits

The Suburban 161357 gas valve fits:

  • Suburban ST-42

  • Suburban ST-60

This valve is specific to the ST-series tankless water heaters and should not be confused with the gas valves used on traditional Suburban SW-series tank water heaters.

What the 161357 Gas Valve Does

The gas valve controls the amount of propane delivered to the burner during operation. Because the ST-42 and ST-60 are on-demand water heaters, the valve works with the control system to regulate burner output based on water flow and temperature demand.

A malfunctioning gas valve can prevent the burner from lighting or cause unstable burner operation.

Signs & Symptoms of a Failed Gas Valve

A failing Suburban 161357 gas valve may cause:

  • Water heater will not ignite

  • Burner attempts to light but immediately shuts down

  • No propane flow to the burner

  • Intermittent burner operation

  • Water temperature fluctuates unexpectedly

  • Heater produces an ignition fault even though propane is available

  • Gas valve does not respond when commanded by the control board

Before replacing the valve, verify the RV has adequate propane supply and check the ignition system, wiring, control board, sensors, and electrical connections.

Estimated Install Time

Approximately 30–60 minutes, depending on access to the water heater and gas connections.

Tools Required

  • Open-end or adjustable wrenches

  • Screwdriver

  • Multimeter

  • Approved gas leak detection solution

  • Basic hand tools

Potential Issues

Any work involving the propane system should be performed carefully.

Turn off the LP gas supply and disconnect electrical power before servicing the water heater. After installation, all disturbed gas connections should be properly leak-tested before operating the appliance.

A no-ignition condition does not automatically indicate a bad gas valve. Similar symptoms can be caused by:

  • Low propane pressure

  • Empty or restricted propane supply

  • Faulty ignition electrode

  • Failed control board

  • Poor electrical ground

  • Wiring problems

  • Faulty flow or temperature sensors

  • Burner or airflow restrictions

Proper diagnosis before replacement can help avoid replacing a functioning valve.
