10 Gallon RV Water Heaters
10 Gallon Dometic RV Water Heaters
Shop 10 gallon Dometic RV water heaters for motorhomes, travel trailers, fifth wheels, toy haulers, and other recreational vehicles. These larger-capacity water heaters are designed for RV owners who need more hot water for showers, dishes, cleaning, and multiple occupants.
Dometic offers two water heaters built around a physical 10 gallon tank: the conventional Dometic WH-10GEA and the higher-output Dometic WH-16GEA XT. Both models provide propane and electric operation, while the WH-16GEA XT uses mixing-valve technology to deliver the equivalent of approximately 16 gallons of usable hot water.
Dometic 10 Gallon RV Water Heater Models
The Dometic 10 gallon water heater lineup includes the WH-10GEA gas and electric water heater and the WH-16GEA XT gas and electric water heater.
Although both models have a physical 10 gallon storage tank, they do not provide the same usable hot-water capacity. The WH-10GEA operates as a conventional 10 gallon water heater, while the WH-16GEA XT heats the stored water to a higher temperature and blends it with cold water to increase the amount of usable hot water.
Dometic WH-10GEA 10 Gallon Gas and Electric Water Heater
The Dometic WH-10GEA is a conventional 10 gallon gas and electric RV water heater. It allows RV owners to heat water with propane, 120-volt AC electricity, or both energy sources when supported by the RV’s wiring and control system.
Propane operation provides hot water while dry camping or traveling without shore power. Electric operation allows the water heater to use campground electricity instead of consuming propane. When faster recovery is needed, gas and electric heating may be used together in a properly configured installation.
The WH-10GEA is a practical choice for larger RVs, families, full-time travelers, and anyone who regularly needs more hot water than a standard 6 gallon unit can provide.

Dometic WH-16GEA XT 10 Gallon Water Heater
The Dometic WH-16GEA XT is a gas and electric RV water heater with a physical 10 gallon tank. Dometic’s XT mixing-valve system increases the amount of usable hot water produced by the unit.
Water inside the tank is heated to a higher temperature and then blended with cold water as it leaves the water heater. This allows the WH-16GEA XT to provide the equivalent of approximately 16 gallons of usable hot water at 130 degrees Fahrenheit.
The WH-16GEA XT is designed for RV owners who want longer showers, increased recovery capacity, or enough hot water for several people without installing a water heater with a physical 16 gallon tank.

WH-10GEA vs. WH-16GEA XT
The primary difference between the Dometic WH-10GEA and WH-16GEA XT is usable hot-water output.
The WH-10GEA stores and provides approximately 10 gallons of hot water. It is a conventional gas and electric model suited to RV owners who want dependable capacity without an XT mixing system.
The WH-16GEA XT also has a physical 10 gallon tank, but its mixing valve increases usable output to approximately 16 gallons. This makes it a better choice for larger families, full-time RV living, longer showers, and applications with heavier hot-water demand.
The WH-16GEA XT is also deeper than the standard WH-10GEA, so available installation space must be measured carefully before ordering.
Gas and Electric Dometic Water Heaters
Both Dometic 10 gallon water heater models provide gas and electric operation. This gives RV owners flexibility when moving between campgrounds, dry-camping locations, and storage facilities.
Propane operation is useful when shore power is unavailable. Electric operation allows the water heater to use 120-volt campground or generator power. Using both heat sources may improve hot-water recovery when the water heater and RV electrical system are properly configured.
A 12-volt DC connection is still required to operate the electronic ignition, control board, and safety components.
What Is a Dometic XT Water Heater?
Dometic XT water heaters use a thermostatic mixing valve to increase usable hot-water capacity. The stored water is heated above the normal delivery temperature and then mixed with cold water before being sent to the RV’s faucets and shower.
The Dometic WH-16GEA XT has an actual tank capacity of 10 gallons but provides approximately 16 gallons of usable hot water. The 16 gallon designation refers to effective output rather than the physical size of the storage tank.
This distinction is important when comparing models, evaluating replacement options, and measuring the available installation space.
Replacing an Older 10 Gallon Atwood Water Heater
Dometic acquired Atwood’s RV water heater product line, and current Dometic models may replace select older Atwood 10 gallon water heaters. However, a replacement should never be selected based only on gallon capacity.
Older Atwood model numbers may include GC10A, G10A, GCH10A, and related configurations. These model numbers identify differences in propane operation, electric heating, engine-assisted heating, ignition systems, and model revisions.
Before ordering a replacement, verify:
-
The complete Atwood or Dometic model number
-
The original product or SKU number
-
Gas-only or gas and electric operation
-
Physical tank capacity
-
Sidewall cutout dimensions
-
Available installation depth
-
Exterior access-door dimensions
-
Propane-line location
-
Hot and cold water connections
-
12-volt DC control wiring
-
120-volt AC wiring
-
Interior switches and controls
-
Required adapter brackets or installation kits
A current Dometic WH-10GEA or WH-16GEA XT may require changes to the mounting brackets, access door, wiring, plumbing, or control switches when replacing an older Atwood water heater.
Dometic 10 Gallon Water Heater Dimensions
The Dometic WH-10GEA measures approximately 15.8 inches wide and high by 21 inches deep. The recommended installation cutout is approximately 16.3 inches wide by 15.8 inches high by 20.6 inches deep.
The Dometic WH-16GEA XT measures approximately 15.8 inches wide and high by 25 inches deep. Its recommended installation cutout is approximately 16.3 inches wide by 15.8 inches high by 25.1 inches deep.
The additional depth of the WH-16GEA XT is required for its mixing-valve system. Always compare the specifications for the exact product number with the available space inside the RV before ordering.
Do Dometic 10 Gallon Water Heaters Need an Anode Rod?
Dometic tank-style RV water heaters use aluminum tanks and do not require the sacrificial anode rods commonly used in steel-tank water heaters.
An aftermarket anode rod should not be installed unless Dometic specifically approves it for the exact model. Use the manufacturer-specified drain plug and follow Dometic’s instructions when draining, flushing, sanitizing, or winterizing the water heater.
Are Exterior Access Doors Included?
Dometic replacement water heaters may be sold without an exterior access door. The existing door may not fit a new model, particularly when replacing an older Atwood water heater or changing from a conventional model to an XT water heater.
Verify the required door, mounting hardware, color, and installation kit for the exact Dometic product number before completing the order.
Find the Correct 10 Gallon Dometic Water Heater
Browse our selection of 10 gallon Dometic RV water heaters to compare the conventional WH-10GEA with the higher-output WH-16GEA XT.
Choose the WH-10GEA for traditional 10 gallon hot-water capacity and gas and electric operation. Choose the WH-16GEA XT when additional usable hot water is needed and the RV has enough installation depth for the XT mixing-valve system.
For the most accurate replacement match, locate the data label on the existing water heater and record the complete model number and product number. Verifying the original unit’s identification, dimensions, energy sources, wiring, and connections is the best way to avoid ordering an incompatible replacement.
