Description
Dometic Atwood 93866 RV Water Heater Thermal Cut-Off Kit
The Dometic Atwood 93866 Thermal Cut-Off Kit is an OEM safety component used on a wide range of Atwood electronic-ignition RV water heaters. The thermal cut-off acts as a heat-sensitive safety fuse designed to shut the water heater down if excessive heat is detected outside the normal burner area.
If flame rollout, a blocked burner tube, insect nest, debris, or another abnormal combustion condition causes excessive heat near the thermal cut-off, the 93866 opens the electrical circuit and prevents continued water heater operation.

Atwood XT Models
The 93866 is also used on several Atwood XT water heaters, including:
-
G9-EXT
-
G16-EXT
-
GE9-EXT
-
GE16-EXT
-
GEH9-EXT

GEH16-EXT
Newer Dometic WH-Series Models
The same thermal cut-off is also listed for select newer Dometic water heaters, including:
-
WH-6GA
-
WH-6GEA
-
WH-9GEA
This makes the 93866 one of the more broadly used Atwood/Dometic water-heater safety components.
What the 93866 Thermal Cut-Off Does
The thermal cut-off is installed in the electrical circuit near the burner area.
Under normal operating conditions, electricity passes through the thermal cut-off to the water heater controls. If excessive heat reaches the device, the internal fuse opens and interrupts the circuit.
Once the thermal cut-off has opened, it cannot be reset and must be replaced.
Common Signs of a Failed Thermal Cut-Off
A blown 93866 may cause:
-
Water heater is completely unresponsive
-
No ignition attempt
-
No spark at the burner
-
Gas valve does not open
-
Water heater suddenly stopped working after previously operating normally
-
12V power is present at the heater but does not pass through the thermal cut-off
A continuity test with a multimeter can usually determine whether the thermal cut-off has opened.
Why Did the Thermal Cut-Off Fail?
A failed thermal cut-off is often a symptom of another problem, not simply a defective fuse.
Common causes include:
-
Spider webs or insect nests in the burner tube
-
Debris restricting burner airflow
-
Dirty or partially blocked burner
-
Improper flame pattern
-
Flame rollout
-
Blocked exhaust area
-
Incorrect LP gas pressure
-
Burner alignment problems
If the replacement thermal cut-off fails again, the underlying combustion problem should be diagnosed before continuing to operate the water heater.
Thermal Rating
The Atwood 93866 is generally identified as a 190°F thermal cut-off used to protect the electronic ignition system from abnormal heat conditions.
Kit Contents
The OEM 93866 service kit is commonly supplied with:
-
2 thermal cut-off devices
Having two in the package also provides a spare if another thermal event occurs after the initial repair.
Estimated Install Time
Approximately 5–15 minutes in most installations.
Tools Required
-
Basic hand tools
-
Multimeter
-
Needle-nose pliers if needed
Installation Notes
Before replacing the thermal cut-off:
-
Turn off LP gas to the water heater.
-
Disconnect 12V electrical power.
-
Inspect and clean the burner tube and combustion area.
-
Check for insect nests, debris, soot, or evidence of flame rollout.
-
Install the replacement thermal cut-off in the same location as the original.
Do not bypass the thermal cut-off. It is an important safety device designed to shut the appliance down when excessive heat is detected.
